What are carbide tools made of?
They contain mostly Tungsten Carbide powder. Small amount of titanium carbide and tantalum carbide powder is also added to make total powder strength 85-90%.
These powders are mixed with Cobalt, which acts as binder. Then the mix is put in mould of desired shape. Then these are sintered at high temperature and your final carbide cutting tool is formed.
After forming, the tool may be ground for better edge sharpness. It may also be coated with multiple layers of coatings which may be a combination of TiC, TiAlN and Alumina. Coating increases wear resistance.
